Hole in One!

Alan Powis scored an Ace on the 15th in the Seniors Open on the 7th September 2021. Well done Alan.

Captain John Paton's Day

Held 12th June 2021

Yesterday's Captain's Day saw glorious weather and our Captain, John Paton, was able to present prizes outside with the course as a stunning backdrop - perhaps we should do that every year from now on?

The Past Captain's prize was won by John Gray with 33 points in a "tense" card play-off from Neil Waite and Jim Cleland. Alistair Walker won the Captain's Putter with his nearest the pin shot on the 18th which he hit to around 4 feet. He canned the birdie for good measure.

The overall winner was Ken Weaver with 41 points (division 3) with other prize winners as follows. Div 1: Jye Finlay (39), Kevan Mann (38), Scott Butler (38). Div 2 Dan O'Rourke (40), John Wainwright (39), Alan Jones (37). Div 3: TOny Hunt (40), Andy Moore (38), Allan Brown (37).

We would like to thank the Captain for his generosity and wish him well for the rest of the year.

There is little to post from 2020. Vicars Cross Golf Club events and opens were severely curtailed as part of the Corona Virus Safety Precautions.

Lets hope that 2021 gets back to normal as soon as possible.

Meanwhile - stay safe.

David's Ace

Hole In One

Well done David Wilson for your hole in one on the 18th during the Autumn Trophy on the 23rd September 2020. As it happens it was also the 10th Anniversary of when you joined the Club. Well done.

Junior League

One aspect of the Juniors winning the Muirfield League of the Mid Cheshire competition is that they go against the winners of the two other leagues. The match was played Sunday 1st September 2019 at Warrington, Our Club's team came in second against a very mature Hartford side.

The final result was Hartford with 106 points, Vicars Cross 6 behind with 100 and Ringway 9 behind with 97 points.

Well done to the team. Pictured with the trophy are Ben Hamilton, Sophie Clafton, Nathan Rewhorn and James Dolley.

Robin joined the club in 2003 and this is his first Hole in One.

Well done.

David Booth

Speyside Champion

Players competed for a magnificent quaich and prizes reflecting some of the quality products of this area. The Championship Quaich was won by David Booth, Vicars Cross Golf Club. who said “It’s my first time on Speyside – an amazing experience, fantastic event”. Last year’s winner, Liz Ruscoe also came from Vicars Cross Golf Club.

More than 100 golfers once again travelled to Speyside for the seventh annual running of Speyside Golf Experience’s Festival.

Locals and visitors from all over the UK, as well as Switzerland and Germany saw Speyside at its welcoming best over the 3rd – 7th September and enjoyed excellent weather as well as two of Scotland’s most iconic products – golf and whisky over five days and visited many attractions this area has to offer.

Golfers played 18 holes each day, teeing off first at Boat of Garten GC, then onto Grantown on Spey, Moray’s Championship Old Course at Lossiemouth, then Forres, with the final day’s play at Elgin.

The Speyside Golf Experience is a tourism initiative designed to promote the very best of Speyside through its golf courses, hotels and visitor attractions and is supported by the participating golf clubs and leading businesses on Speyside.

James Macpherson, Chairman of Speyside Golf Experience said: “Whisky including locally distilled gins and golf have vast, worldwide appeal. Speyside is at the heart of "uisge beatha" - the water of life as well as having very highly regarded golf courses, each of them over 100 years old that offer players tradition and uniquely different challenges”.

“This week’s visitors to our area have been so full of praise at the warmth of welcome they’ve been given at all Clubs, the visitor attractions and at hotels and B&B’s where they’ve been so well cared for.”

Two in one day

A 'hole-in-one' is always a big event in golf but to have 2 in one competition is exceptional. This happened on Monday in a Seniors Section 4 ball Texas Scramble competition at Vicars Cross. Firstly, Jeremy Dodd holed out on the 13th hole and he was followed 1/2 an hour later by Bill Smith on the same hole.
Bill, aged 85 and a Past Club President, has been a member for 49 years, this was his 5th 'hole-in-one'. He is pictured (hatless) with team mates Duncan Edmundson, Ken Sutton and Mike Foley.

Top result for the Club

The Captain and Professional represent the Club in Spain

The PGA website article reads:- Kneesy does it!

Vicars Cross captain Kenny Close clinched a place in the Golfplan Insurance PGA Pro-Captain Challenge final just six months after undergoing knee surgery.

Kenny teamed up with PGA Professional Martin O’Connor to win the North qualifying event held at Dunham Forest Golf Club.

The Cheshire duo carded a 10-under-par round of 62 to win by one shot ahead of Freddy Valenti and David McIntyre, of Warrington’s Poulton Park Golf Club, Richard Reed and Robert Blair from Glen Gorse Golf Club, Leicestershire, and Kieron Gaskell and Mark Ord from Bolton’s Westhoughton Golf Club.

The Captain and Martin will now play in the £25,000 final at Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community in Spain at the end of November.

As far as the 59-year-old Kenny was concerned, the result was a personal triumph as he could barely hit a ball earlier this year following knee surgery.

The retired builder from Eastham on the Wirral explained: “I needed a new knee and went into hospital back in February.

“It meant I was on walking sticks for a while but I was back playing again by the middle of May.

“I couldn’t do much at first but now it feels as good as new.

“So to win this with Martin is fantastic and the trip to Spain to play in the final is a great prize.”

Kenny, who plays off 11, admitted it was a tense wait before knowing he and Martin had won.

“When we came in ahead of teams who’d made nine under par, so we knew we had a chance,” he added.

“But you always wonder if someone’s going to come and beat you at the end - thankfully they didn’t.”

Martin admitted the win made up for missing out on the Lombard Trophy PGA National Pro-am Championship Final at the same venue in June.

He was joint second then but Martin made no mistake this time.

“We were seven-under after the front nine and picked up our only dropped shot at the 10th, but then we made four birdies in a row,” he said.

“And we divided the birdies up between us, Kenny made five and I made six, so if your captain’s playing well then you stand a good chance of winning.

"But that was actually the first time we'd played alongside each other in a competition so we did well!" (Click here to visit the page on the PGA website)

Tony Moscrop's Round

Well done Tony

In the Turkey Competition on the 11th October, a dazed Tony Moscrop was walking around after his round not quite believing what had just happened.

He had just had the round of his life.

He just shot a gross 72 which with his handicap of 11 gave a net stableford score of 47 and has put a turkey on the table for Christmas and a smile on his face that will last some time.

Well done Tony and it is so pleasing to add your round in to the clubs notable events.

Seniors Captain's Day

Seniors Captain, Keith Herbert, welcomed 56 Competitors to his Captains Day on a cool and sometimes wet day. Refreshments were provided in the halfway house by his wife, Jenny, and she was assisted by Sue Price. Pictures were taken on the tee and around the course by Sue Breeze and a Photo Album and DVD have been made and given to Keith to remind him of the day. A comedian was hired at the cost of the Senior Captain to entertain the troops at the evening dinner and presentation. A good time was had by all.

A marque was set up at the 18th hole where each competitor could benefit from the vouchers for money off a beer provided by Keith. Some good golf was played, despite the weather with the overall winner, Ian Hay coming in with 43 points. Prizes were also given for the best score for competitors over 75, first second and third in both divisions as well as nearest the pin on each of the 4 par 3s and golf balls for 2s. Fortunately for Keith he did not have to pay out the £100 he put up for anyone getting a hole in one.

Well done Tony Sharp!

Hole in One for Yvonne

Congratulations and mine is a whisky

Well done to Yvonne Earley who had a Hole in One on the 8th on Wednesday 26th June in the Ladies Stableford competition.

Rachel Turner - Grand Medal Finalist

Congratulations to Rachel for coming within one stroke of winning Englands Grand Medal Finals 2013.

Rachel Turner joined Vicars Cross Golf Club in January 2008 as a golfing beginner and in less than 6 years has achieved a handicap of 8!
In 2012 she won the overall Vicars Cross Golf Medal which entitled her to enter the Regional Final. This was held at Eaton Golf Club, on Thursday 23rd May 2013. Like so much of our weather this year, the day was wet and extremely windy, making the conditions very tough.
There were 115 competitors in the field from the North West Region and only the top 10 could qualify for the Grand Medal Final. Rachel scored an incredible 83-9-74 and came 3rd place in the Regional Final.
Out of the 700 competitors who played in the Regional Finals across the Country, 60 qualified to play in the Grand Medal Final. This was held at Northamptonshire County Golf Club on Saturday 29th June 2013
In Rachel’s words, “The day was fantastic one of the biggest golfing events I have been in. I felt very nervous but having the support of my family, and my mum Pauline as my caddie it settled me down. The course was in immaculate condition and the greens were like lightening.”
Rachel scored 83-9-74, which was one under par for the course, and for a while she was the leader in the club house. She eventually achieved overall 2nd losing out on 1st place to a lady who scored 99-26-73. Rachel, who had set a goal of being in the top ten, was absolutely thrilled with the final result in this very prestigious competition final.
Everyone at Vicars Cross Golf Club is extremely proud of Rachel’s achievement. This is the first time a member from our club has qualified for the Grand Medal Final, to come 2nd in the Country is an amazing accomplishment. We wish her continued success in her golfing career.
